Frobisher has been disowned by his aristocratic family, kicked out of the university, and pursued by creditors. The second tale - "Letters" - is one of a ne'er-do-well young, English music student, Robert Frobisher. Letters from Zedelghem Main article: Letters from Zedelghem Goose is persuaded to tend to the Captain, who has an undisclosed malady, as well as Ewing, who has been suffering from something he calls his "Ailment." In attempting to "cure" Ewing, Goose reveals himself to be a fraud and a con man and almost kills Ewing. Autua presents himself to the captain, who reluctantly takes him on as part of the crew in exchange for his passage. When the ship sails, Ewing finds that an island native, Autua, has stowed away in his cabin. Goose ends up continuing the journey with Ewing and the ship. He meets and befriends an English doctor, Henry Goose, while marooned briefly on the Chatham Islands during ship repairs. Adam Ewing, a notary from California, is traveling back home from New Zealand after seeking the beneficiary of a will. The first tale, "Adam Ewing", takes place in the mid-1800s in the South Pacific.
